2012 Season Predictions

I'm back.  My life has been crazy over the last few months and it has not allowed me much time to write.  But as the 2012 season is only a week away, I thought it was time to provide my predictions for the upcoming season.  Here they are in particular order.

• Georgia will beat Georgia Tech for the 11th time in 12 years.  I feel more confident about this game than ever before simply due to the fact that we get a warm up game against the triple option the week before in the form of Georgia Southern.
• Speaking of Georgia Southern, I expect the Eagles to go deep in the FCS playoffs again this fall, maybe even winning the whole dang thing.
• Malcome, Marshall, and Gurley split carries, but Marshall will make the most "wow" plays.
• Marlon Brown will catch 40+ passes in his final season at Georgia.
• Georgia walks out of Missouri with a win despite many picks of doom and gloom.  South Carolina and an improved Auburn team will prove to be the toughest games on Georgia's schedule (I would have said Tennessee as well, but losing Rodgers, as bad of a character guy as he was, really is a huge blow to the Vols.)
• No team in the SEC goes undefeated.  Yes, that includes Alabama.  As a matter of fact, I think no team will go undefeated this year.
• USC (the real USC, not those losers in Columbia) will split their two games with Oregon.  But, they will win the most important one, the PAC-12 Championship game, and earn a spot in the BCS Title game.
• West Virginia may surprise some folks and win the Big XII.
• The Big Ten....what a joke.  The season starts with Michigan getting crushed by Bama and ends with the conference champ losing yet another Rose Bowl.
• Clemson will continue to come back down to Earth.  Florida State or Virginia Tech take back the title of ACC Champion.
• Aaron Murray decreases his interception total but also throws fewer touchdowns.
• Mike Leach takes Washington State back to a bowl game.  The guys who bring the flag every week to Game Day rejoice!
• There will be two upsets in the chick Fil A kickoff.  NC State takes down Tennessee and Auburn defeats Clemson.
• Malcolm Mitchell picks off at least two passes at corner.
• Matt Barkley wins the Heisman. 
• Georgia goes 11-1 and plays in the SEC Championship.

The Countdown 2012 - 99 Days to Go

No matter what happens this fall, no Georgia fan will forget Richard Samuel for his play in the 4th quarter against Florida last year.

Hopefully, Dick Sam the 4th will shove it down Florida's throat again this year.

Thoughts on G Day 2012

Usually, G Day has proven to be rather boring. So, while there were over 40,000 people at Sanford yesterday, I was the only member of my group of friends to go. But, I got to see a competitive game and I am very glad I made the decision to drive to Athens. Here are my thoughts on the game:

- Beast of the game - Garrison Smith. He was destroying the o-line, especially in the first half. It seems like his play late in the season last year was just a sign of good things to come.

- Our new defensive ends - Both Cornelius Washington and Ray Drew have made the move to D end and both looked good. Drew definitely looks better with his hand in the dirt. He recorded two sacks and showed some impressive speed chasing down Brandon Harton.

- Tavarres King showed off some major speed, taking a swing pass from Murray to the house after a nice block from Marlon Brown. I think T King is up to the challenge of being the deep threat while Mitchell plays corner the first few games of the season.

- Hutson Mason and Christian LeMay both had nice games. LeMay has come a long way from last spring and is really good at the play action fakes. But he needs to work on his down field accuracy an decision making. While those guys may have head better numbers, Aaron Murray is clearly still the best QB we have. He was under constant pressure from the #1 defense and still made some nice plays.

- Jarvis Jones is awesome. He only had one tackle, but was in the backfield consistently and looked as quick as ever.

- It was a good day for the running backs. I was really pleased with Crowell, who despite not having special numbers looked healthy, was quick to the edge, and was lowering his head and finishing runs. If the line comes together, I fully expect he will have a great sophomore year. Ken Malcome has also come along nicely and scored two touchdowns. Richard Samuel looked great in the second half as well. Even Brandon Harton may have found a spot, catching 6 passes out of the backfield. Running him up the middle may not be smart, but getting the little guy alone in space may be a nice wrinkle in the Georgia offense.

- Thank God we have a scholarship punter coming this fall. The walk-ons they had out there were terrible. With no rush, you should always be able to kick it at least 35 or 40 yards!

Overall, a fun spring day in Athens. Now we head to the dead period until summer practice. I have been busy lately, but hopefully I will get back into a regular writing schedule soon.

Where's the beef?

By all accounts, Georgia had a very successful 2012 recruiting class. We brought in some amazing talents who may contribute as soon as this fall. But one area that was lacking was offensive linemen. Georgia appears to be the leader for Maryland transfer Max Garcia, who would be eligible to play beginning in 2013, and that would be a good start. The 2013 class already has 9 commitments, filled with four and five star recruits near the top of their class. But so far, Georgia does not have an offensive lineman committed.

Yes, I know it is still way early. But as we found out when Avery Young decided to commit to Auburn after appearing to be headed for Georgia and Davlin Tomlinson went to Bama, we can't sit around and wait on everyone. Why does it appear we are having no trouble getting great athletes at skill positions, but not having the same luck with linemen?

One reason could be the change in coaching. Whether you like Stacy Searels or not, his name was recognized as a good offensive line coach. You don't coach at LSU, Georgia, and Texas without a decent reputation. We replaced Searels with Will Friend, who has done a nice job. But coming from UAB, Friend did not have the name recognition of Searels. While he is building that reputation now, it still may have set us back in that area.

I hope that Georgia pulls in a strong line class to complement all the talent we are finding in the backfields. Here are a few of the names to pay attention to in the coming months:

• Brandon Kublanow, Center, Marietta - rated the #2 center in the class of 2013
• DeVondre Seymour - Offensive Tackle, Suwannee - Yes, that name sound familiar. Seymour is the adopted son of former Georgia lineman Richard Seymour (Devondre is actually his nephew)
• Josh Outlaw - Guard, Lithonia - 3 star recruit rated #20 guard in the 2013 class
• Jeremi Hall - Guard, East Point - 4 Star rated, 6'4'', 335 monster who is rated the #6 guard in the 2013 class
• Shamire Devine - Tackle, East Point - another 4 star rated tackle who stands at 6'7''

Carlton is gone...

Carlton Thomas has decided to transfer. Let's be honest, the little running back who could against Auburn was not going to be the main man in back field with Isaiah Crowell, Keith Marshall, and Todd Gurley. We wish Carlton the best as he concludes his senior year in a uniform other than the red and black of Georgia. And as Carlton Thomas leaves, we say good bye to the Carlton Thomas touchdown dance!

The Bubba N Earl March Madness 2012

I have set up a new tournament challenge for this year. If you participated last year, we were over at CBS but I have set us up at ESPN this year. I'll try to update the standings as best I can, but I'll be at the lake with no internet this weekend.

I've got Kentucky, Missouri, Kansas, and Syracuse in the Final Four, with Kentucky winning the whole thing. Who ya got?
