It's Been a While, but I'm Back

So things have been kind of dead here on the blog the last few weeks, despite an abundance of things going on within the Bulldog nation. But let me explain. I was on vacation in Hawaii (absolutely amazing) during NSD and have been completely swamped at work since I got back. Here's my thoughts on what has transpired over the last few weeks:

  • My only real disappointment with our recruiting class was the failure to land Avery Young. Cordarelle Patterson choosing Tennessee was a bit of a surprise, but we really did not need receivers. After losing Chester Brown, I thought Young was the most important target we had left. I'm glad we got JHC, but I wish we would have gotten Young instead.
  • Of course, the dismissals make the lack of DB depth in the recruiting class look bad. I am really bummed about Nick Marshall. My brother in law is close with some people in the Wilcox County program and have been hearing about Nick for years. I was very excited when he came to Georgia and had big expectations for him. But stealing from anyone, especially teammates, should get you kicked off the team.
  • The Chris Sanders situation is becoming more interesting everyday. Today, Sanders spoke about his dismissal and it appears he was not involved in the shenanigans that Seay and Marshall were. He;s going to enroll at GMC and it looks like there may be a chance he is back in Athens in 2013. This is a kid who bleeds red and black and loves Georgia who is owning up to his mistakes. If he gets his stuff together at GMC, I would love to see him back in a Bulldog uniform.
  • It looks like the Dawgs may pick up a few Juco additions to the class to supplement the loss of the dismissed players and Chester Brown. While I don't always love the JUCO route, we need experienced bodies right now. The starting groups look great next year, but except for wide receiver, running back, and DE/OLB, we are pretty thin.
  • While I am all for the protection of players, I HATE the decision to move the touchbacks up from the 20 to the 25. I know that means there will be incentive to not just kick it deep like they do in the NFL, but this is a fundamental change to how football has been played as long as I can remember and I just don't like it.
  • Losing the Auburn game would suck. Can't we just have Tennessee move to the West division? That would be a perfect solution. Tennessee could still play Bama every year, we could still play Auburn every year, and Tennessee would become our new permanent rival in the west. Seems perfect to me.
  • The more I look at oversigning, the more I think Nick Saban is a dick. A good coach? Hell yeah. But really a dick. I am glad that kid from Atlanta decided to go to Kentucky. But what makes me really mad in that situation is to know that it was the scholarship that was opened up for Dalvin Tomlinson.
  • I keep hearing good things about Crowell working hard this off season. If Crowell and Marshall become the 1-2 punch we all hope, look for Aaron Murray's completion percentage to go up and his INTs to go down this fall.
  • Dear Board of Regents: Get the contract extensions done. Nor more debating, we need to lock Richt and Grantham down. It helps recruiting and because of the lack of size in the 2012 class, we need to get as much momentum as possible for 2013 as early as possible.
  • G-Day will be here before we know it. It may be interesting to watch the kicking duties this year. Georgia has a punter and kicker coming in as part of the 2012 class this fall, but neither of them will be there yet. Most assume Morgan and Barber will win the jobs, but good competition is always better when it comes to kickers.
  • Man, the Georgia basketball team is not good. I feel really bad for Coach Fox. He is a good coach, but has not been able to get the talent he needs to win. One five star recruit surrounded by a bunch of lightly recruited players doesn't cut it against teams like Kentucky, where they have 7 or 8 players who will be in the NBA soon. And it looks like the Dawgs are going to miss out on the biggest talents in Georgia once again this year.
  • Baseball season is upon. Major league pitchers and catcher begin reporting in the next two weeks and the Diamond Dawgs begin play next Friday. The Dawgs will open the season ranked #11 in the country, but are only the 5th ranked team in the SEC. Florida opens the year at #1 and two time defending national champion South Carolina at #3. It's going to be another tough go at it, but hopefully Coach Perno can get the boys back to the CWS for the first time since 2008.
That's it for now. Next week, I'm going to pick back up with my Damn Good Dawgs series.

Friday's Quick Thoughts

Here's a few things on my mind this week:

The loss to Michigan State signifies to me that we have become the benchmark for programs on the rise. If you want to become a national player, you must first lose a game to Georgia. You program will have reached elite level once you can come back and beat the Dawgs a few years later. If you don't believe me, think about this.
  • In 2005, Georgia crushed an up and coming Boise State program. Over the next few years, Boise State played in two BCS games and had a Heisman trophy finalist. When they faced the Dawgs again in 2011, they defeated them and went onto another 12-1 season that ended with a bowl victory.
  • In 2007, Georgia defeated an up and coming Oklahoma State team. The Cowboys would continue to get better under Coach Mike Gundy and defeated the Bulldogs at home to open the 2009 season. In 2011, OSU won the Big XII, just missed playing for the MNC, won a BCS bowl, and will finish either 2nd or 3rd in the nation.
  • In 2009, Georgia defeated Michigan State in the Capital One Bowl following the 2008 season. With quarterback Kirk Cousins, Michigan State would win a share of the Big Ten title in 2010 and play in the first Big Ten championship game in 2011. They came back to beat the Dawgs in the Outback Bowl on Monday.
Bowl season has been pretty good this year (with the exception of the Georgia loss). And for once, my bowl picks are doing really well.

Monday night it will be LSU's insane depth and big plays against Alabama's excellence in all phases of the game. I'm still leaning LSU in this one, despite most people appearing to pick Bama.

Recruiting will work itself out over the next few weeks. Georgia will sign between 20 and 25 kids, but most of them will not make much of an impact in 2012...unless we have a bunch of players leave early.

Crowell was hurt, what a surprise. The opportunity is there for Keith Marshall to play right away. If he is impressive at G-Day and the Dawgs pick up some other commits, the running back competition will be the thing to watch this summer.

I will miss Brandon Boykin. God, he was fun to watch. Few players do the fantastic things he can do on the field without being cocky and stuck up. Boykin was a pure class act that I think most people unappreciated. Good luck in the NFL!

Look at what AJ Green did in the NFL this year. Can you imagine if he had stayed?!?

Tennessee football is a mess. I can't see them winning more than 2 games in the SEC next fall.

ACC football is horrible. That is all.

Quick Hits

- The special on Herschel Walker on ESPN last night was pretty awesome. I had never heard the story about his difficulties with bullying in middle school and how he chose to transform himself. Pretty moving stuff. And watching the highlights again, I can honestly say there has never been another running back since Herschel that had the combination of speed and strength he had. The dude was just amazing.

- Everyone is frustrated. The fans, the players, the media, and Mark Richt. Coach Richt asked the reporters if they wanted to see him blow up and start throwing things. My first response was, hell yes.

- The Dawgs will be an underdog at home this weekend. That is a very rare occurrence (I believe I read this is only the 3rd or 4th time since 2000). That is pretty amazing.

- Going into last year, Mark Richt had only lost 4 non-conference games in his first 9 seasons at Georgia. He has now lost 3 of his last 6. That's not good.

- South Carolina is a good football team, but they are not unbeatable. East Carolina had them on the ropes last week. If the Dawgs can find a way to keep the score low, I think we win. My god, a man can hope.

- I predicted a loss last week with the caveat that we would win this week. Despite the poor performance against Boise State, my feelings remain the same.

10 Things I Think

With just a few days til kickoff, here's what's on my mind.

1. The SEC Classic Games event that has been running on FS South the last few days has been awesome. I have watched some great Georgia moments, including the entire hobnail boot game from 2011. They should do this every year.

2. Texas A&M is coming. I haven't said much on the conversation of SEC expansion, but with A&M telling the Big XII they are leaving yesterday, it seems like a foregone conclusion. My preference for the 14th team would be North Carolina. They have a decent football program with the proper booster backing plus a tremendous basketball program that would be an instant rival for Kentucky. i would much rather pick up the Tar Heels than FSU, Virginia Tech, or Clemson.

3. Bacarri Rambo has to be suspended, but the question is for how long. It seems amazing that the Dawgs will begin the season without the two players (Rambo and Hamilton) who were listed atop the safety depth chart after spring and no one really seems that worried.

4. I like Brandon Boykin's challenge to Chris Peterson on Twitter. Yes, Boise will be favored but that doesn't mean the Dawgs should go into the game without any confidence. Hopefully, the Broncos honor the request and we see Boykin take one back for 100+ again.

5. I have much more confidence in the running back trio of Crowell, Samuel, and Malcome than I did in King, Ealey, and Thomas heading into last year. Between King and Ealey, I can think of at least 4 crucial fumbles that they had in the last two years that were the difference in close games (Kentucky 2009, Miss State 2010, South Carolina 2010, Colorado 2010).

6. Tavarres King and Marlon Brown will be solid receivers this year. The last time we entered a season without a standout at receiver was 2005. I seem to remember us picking up an SEC title with Bryan McClendon, Sean Bailey, and a freshman Mohammed Massaquoi.

7. I am excited that Kwame Geathers has performed well enough to keep the starting job at NT. Big boys like Geathers and Jenkins cannot play every down, so having two dominating forces in the middle will be a great advantage.

8. Since ESPN has decided to be in Arlington on Sunday instead of Atlanta, our game has almost become the big game that isn't important to them. I have heard countless reports on LSU-Oregon, but very little on the Georgia-BSU matchup. Granted, our game is not a clash of two top 5 teams, however, it is one of the only games this week that matches two rank opponents.

9. When will the hammer drop of Miami and Ohio State? Right, it looks like they will be able to take the field this fall without any fear of bowl banishment. That means they can still compete for conference championships and reap all the benefits from playing in bowl games. Seems pretty ass-backwards that the NCAA suspended AJ Green for 4 games for selling one jersey but won't step up and punish cheaters that included the coaching staffs at the universities.

10. And lastly....

FOOTBALL, FOOTBALL, FOOTBALL! Finally! It is time to make 2010 a distant memory and right the ship in Athens.

GO DAWGS!!!!

The Countdown 2011: 44 Days to Go

TEN THINGS I AM THINKING RIGHT NOW ABOUT THE 2011 SEASON

1. I would much rather see Richard Samuel carrying the ball up the middle in the season opener than Carlton Thomas. While it is never good to have suspensions and I still think Samuel would be better as a linebacker, this just feels better.

2. So we are going to wear Pro Combat jerseys. They better not be solid black and please God, no red face masks.

3. As the season gets closer, I can't help but feeling the South Carolina game is going to be much tougher than the Boise State game.

4. If the Dawgs can't beat a Tennessee team that only has 24 upper classmen on it in Knoxville, then something is seriously wrong.

5. I think Knile Davis will up being the best running back in the SEC this year. Lattimore, Richardson, and Dyer will be good too, but too many weapons at receiver for Arkansas will lead to a lot of long carries for Davis.

6. Brandon Boykin is going to turn some heads in the SEC this fall. Most people (outside of Georgia) only know him for his kick return ability. That will change.

7. The offensive line is thin, but not bad. In 2007, we had two returning starters and freshmen on the line. We all saw how that turned out. This year, we have three returning starters plus another senior. If the line can stay healthy, they may surprise a lot of people this fall.

8. Jarvis Jones' eligibility may play a key role in the Boise State game. I fully expect him to be one of the best linebackers in the SEC by the end of this season, but if he has to miss time early on, the linebacking corp will be left pretty thin on experience.

9. As bad as last season was, I am glad to see Georgia fans are still supporting the team. Despite there not being a true cutoff score for tickets, we still managed to sell out all of the tickets (for now). Tennessee is having to cross promote with NASCAR to try and sell tickets for its home opener. Just sad. A turn around season for the Dawgs will keep this thought out of mind.

10. This looks like it will be awesome. Set your DVRs.

GO DAWGS!!!

Random Thoughts for a Random Tuesday

The first full week in April is always a great one for sports. The NCAA tournament concludes, the baseball season gets going, and The Masters hands out another green jacket. Throw in spring practice and great weather, and things don't get much better. Here are my thoughts on what's going on right now:

- WRESTLEMANIA - On Sunday night, myself and two friends relived our high school days by attending Wrestlemania at the Georgia Dome. I have been to plenty of sporting events in the dome (not to mention monster trucks, motivational speakers, and concerts) but nothing gets that place as loud as Wrestling does. The last time I went to wrestling in the dome, former Georgia lineman Bill Goldberg defeated Hulk Hogan for the WCW Championship. And while this night was not nearly as exciting, we did get to see The Rock, Stone Cold Steve Austin, and even Snooki from the Jersey Shore.

You can check out some crappy videos I took on my phone at my YouTube page

- UConn beats Butler for its third NCAA title since 1999. Just like Auburn, they win a championship in a year where they were accused of violations in their program. Unlike Auburn, Jim Calhoun was actually suspended for games this year. Funny how none of the announcers seemed to mention it during the game. I really wanted Butler to pull out the victory, but when you shoot 18% from the field, you don't deserve to win.

In Georgia basketball news, Travis Leslie is planning to make his decision concerning the NBA draft soon. If he decides to return, Georgia could be back in the tournament next March. Without him, that mountain is going to be a lot tougher to climb.

- Georgia baseball is starting to figure things out. After a year of the worst baseball play ever seen in Athens, the Diamond Dawgs have looked impressive in SEC play. At 6-3 in the SEC, the Dawgs are back to .500 overall and have even made it back into the college rankings. I know many were calling for Perno's head, but if the team can continue to improve, he may earn at least one more season at Foley.

- Spring practice continues and things are quiet. I am perfectly fine with that. Normally, G-Day would be this weekend. Smart more by McGarity to move it away from Master weekend. I am encouraged by the words about Caleb King.

Wednesday Night Ramblings

It is a random Wednesday in March and we are still a few weeks away from spring practice. Things have been relatively quiet around the Georgia football program and that is a good thing.

- I just watched Mark Fox's Bulldogs close out their 20th win of the season. The win most likely seals Georgia's invitation to the NCAA tournament and is quite an accomplishment for a program that managed to win 0 games on the road last year. I have been very impressed watching Jeremy Price grow into a great player and leader this year.

- I know Travis Leslie and Trey Thompkins are most likely leaving, but just imagine the team we could have with them back. Add Kentavious Caldwell-Pope to the mix, and the Dawgs would be a top 15 team next year. With an NBA lockout almost more certain than the NFL lockout coming next year, maybe we'll get lucky.

- What's the best part about the Dawgs not being ranked in last year's preseason top 25 in football? Not being included in the Sports Illustrated story this week about NCAA football players with arrest records. Last offseason was bad enough with the Fulmer Cup Championship. I am sure we would not have been like TCU (the only school in the top 25 without a player with an arrest record).

-While the Dawgs may have dominated the Fulmer Cup one traffic incident at a time last fall, this offseason has been completely silent. When the only news coming out of Athens had to do with players lives on the field it is good news.

-Looks like Aaron Murray will be healthy for spring practice. With Ealey also reinstated, G-Day could be a lot of fun to watch this year.

- Hines Ward is going to be on Dancing with the Stars. I hate the show but my wife loves it. At least Hines will have something to keep him busy during the lockout.

- Justin Houston turned heads at the combine. I would love for him to fall to the Falcons, but I don't think it will happen.

- Georgia baseball continues to struggle. I miss the days when we were pretty much guaranteed to make the CWS every other year(2001, 2004, 2006, 2008). Perno took us within one game of a National Title, but it may be time for him to go.

Weekend Thoughts

- Has there ever been a more star-studded underclassmen group that this year's group of players from the SEC? AJ Green, Mark Ingram, Cam Newton, Nick Fairley, Julio Jones, Patrick Peterson, and Justin Houston will almost all certainly be first round picks. And there are more big names (Hill, Cobb, etc.) in the class as well.

- Saturday's win over Ole Miss by the men's basketball team may have been the best offensive game I have ever seen by the Georgia Bulldogs. Considering that Ole Miss shot the ball pretty well (47%), the 22 point victory is that much more impressive.

- Trey Thompkins is destined to win the SEC Player of the Year Award. He dominates the floor and has become deadly on short range shots. He reminds me a lot of Al Horford. Travis Leslie continues to get better and continues to add to his ever growing highlight film.

- This is a big recruiting week for the Dawgs. With only two weeks until National Signing Day, the Dawgs need to finish this class strong. On Friday, two of Georgia's key targets (Jay Rome and Malcom Mitchell) will announce their choice. I have a feeling they will be heading to Athens.

- The Atlanta Falcons got smoked by the Green Bay Packers on Saturday. It seemed to be a somewhat fitting ended to a horrible year for football in the state of Georgia. And despite the Falcons inability to win a playoff game, they still managed to have more wins this year (13) than Georgia and Georgia Tech combined (12). Pretty sad.

Friday Thoughts and a Few Links

Well, it has been quite an interesting week for the Dawg nation and the college football landscape as a whole. From the Mettenberger situation to the NFL draft, there are a lot of interesting stories going on right now. Here are my thoughts as well as some links for your Friday:

- Coach Richt has released the post spring depth chart and the biggest story is Aaron Murray on top of the depth chart at quarterback. This was all a forgone conclusion after the Meetenberger dismissal, but I am glad that Richt stated that Murray would have been #1 even if Mett was still around. Here's the quote from Richt (courtesy of David Hale):
“I’m not out to hurt anybody worse than they might have been hurt to this point, but Aaron would have been the No. 1 quarterback.”

- Check out the full post spring depth chart HERE.

- Christian Robinson at the top of the linebacking depth chart was a surprise. As Earl said to me this morning:

Good to see Robinson listed as a #1 (over Dowtin no less). Seems like he's using his smarts and work ethic to move up the depth charts. Dowtin will see plenty of playing time b/c he's athletically gifted, so I hope Robinson being ahead of him motivates him. But in no way do I expect Robinson to lose his job to Dowtin b/c I don't expect a guy like Robinson to lose his job to anyone once he's secured it.

We have so many LBs. It's great.

- The NFL Draft began last night with a new format of having the first round on Thursday night. As expected, there were no Georgia players taken in round 1.

- Tim Tebow went #25 overall to the Denver Broncos. There has been much debate about how his skills transfer to the NFL. I am not sure what to think at this point, but I certainly do not think he should have gone in round 1. I also can't fathom the idea of Tebow sharing a backfield with Knowshon. It just makes me a little queasy. Here is Smart Football's take on Tebow going to Denver

- Why did the Falcons pass on Dez Bryant?!? I know they needed a linebacker, but when a projected top 10 pick falls that far, I think sometimes you just have to take the best player available. I really wish Derrick Morgan had continued to fall as well. In the end, the Falcons appear to have gotten the player they wanted all along.

- What is it about Florida guys kissing other guys?!? (Even if it is your twin.)

- I received a pretty big response to my SEC expansion post yesterday. It seems most of you think that the SEC would go after other high profile school like Florida State. When I wrote the post, I only considered schools not currently part of a BCS conference and Big East teams (because if the Big 10 pulls anyone from the Big East, it would most likely disband). Here's Michigan blogger MGoBlog's look at what the new Big Ten could look like.

- And lastly, here is an interesting read I found on Sports Illustrated's SI Vault, which allows you to view articles from any previous SI Issue. This is the article that appeared in Sports Illustrated following Georgia's victory over Notre Dame to win the 1980 National Championship.

Have a great weekend and GO DAWGS!!!

What's on my mind - March 25th

My final thoughts on the North Campus situation:
- Things have only gotten really bad on North Campus over the last few years, but what did the University expect. As the drive to build more buildings on campus has continued to grow, many of those new buildings took away from places where people used to tailgate. It started with the building of the Coverdell Building which took away the entire parking lot next to McWhorter. It continued with the building of East Campus Village, the SLC, the Carlton Street Deck, the new Greek park, and the list just goes on and on.
- Last year was even worse because of new ESPN contract, which resulted in 4 of 6 home games taking place after 7 PM. When you give people 6 to 8 hours to party, there is going to be a lot more trash. Plain and simple.
- The University handled this badly and it has turned into a PR nightmare. I'll miss tailgating on North campus this fall but I wouldn't surprised if there is a "pay to play" plan in place for the 2011 season.

AJ Green wants to return punts:
- I am all for it. He is one of the most talented players we have had at Georgia and this will be his last year on campus. Why not take advantage of his playmaking ability why we can. In '08, we tried Knowshon returning punts and he broke one off for 33 yards against South Carolina. But after the loss to Alabama, Knowshon never saw the field at PR again. If he wants do it, I say we give him the chance.

Murray's got a glove:
- If he can make the deep throws with it on, I don't care what it looks like.

3-4 Offense, 3-4 Defense:
- Herschel Walker made the number 34 special during his 3 years in Athens. If the new defense and the running back tandem of Ealey and King can bring an SEC Championship back to Athens, 3-4 will once again be the most talked about number in the Bulldog Nation.

Grantham's Approach to the Depth Chart:
- It seems to me that Grantham is set on putting players in the positions that fit them best, as opposed to trying to make them better players at a specific position. This is contrast to some of the methods employed by Willie (see Bryan Evans) and I am glad to see they moved Samuel inside. I think Richard Samuel will surprise a lot of SEC coaches and leave them thinking they are glad he was playing running back for his first two years at Georgia.

ONLY 18 DAYS UNTIL G-DAY!!!

What's on My Mind - March15th

Let the Madness begin! The NCAA tournament kicks off this week's list of things that I'm thinking about.

- Bracket busting - My final four: Kansas, Kansas State, Duke, West Virginia. Yes, two teams from Kansas and no Kentucky. I'm going with the rest of the country on this one, my national championship pick is Kansas.

- The Bulldogs got screwed - The Mississippi State Bulldogs that is. 23 wins and .5 seconds away from an SEC tournament championship and somehow they get left out. Most people say they should have won more games or beat Kentucky, but based on that logic they should definitely be in over Florida. Florida only had 20 wins and lost to Mississippi State in the SEC tournament. How that gives them a better resume than MSU is beyond me.

- Spring practice kicks back off again. Why the hell did they have two days of practice and then go on Spring Break? Consider that some of the players (hmm, hmm, Mettenberger) spent their spring break boozing it up, what did they really learn in those two days before the break.

- The QB competition will once again be the focus. With Mett out of the race, Murray and Gray will duke it out the next few weeks. I've said it before and I'll say it again, Murray will win the job.

- G -Day is just a few weeks away. The Masters is great and all, but I'll be in Athens. I can watch golf on Sunday.

Monday Thoughts: Things that make me happy

- Team USA. Helluva job. They may have the gold, but we outplayed them. Canada, look out in 2014, because this young US team will now be the experienced vets and you are going to have a big target on your back.

- Georgia beating Florida. Not nearly the same thrill as a football victory over the Gators, but very satisfying none the less.

- Quotes like this (h/t David Hale) by Branden Smith talking about the new defensive scheme:
"I believe that we’re going to get more interceptions this year. Last year, we didn’t get that many picks, and I believe it was the scheme we were in. The scheme we’re in now, it seems like something everybody’s looking forward to – linebackers, D-backs and especially on the D line.” - Branden Smith

- Colt McCoy giving mad props to Aaron Murray. All Murray has to do now is go out and win the job.

- Diamond Dawgs sweep the Hatters. I know it is just Stetson, but good teams take care of business against weaker opponents and the Dawgs took care of business this weekend.

- March - The end of winter, the return of good weather, UGA spring practice, Braves spring training, St. Patrick's Day, and March Madness.

Thoughts of the Week - Feb. 19

With the current dead period before spring practice and work keeping me busy, posting on the blog will continue to be light for the next few weeks. Here are my quick thoughts for this week:

1. If the NCAA comes down hard on USC for transgressions during the Pete Carroll era, what will happen to the program if it gets in trouble under Kiffin (which it eventually will)?

2. The Winter Olympics...still not as cool as the Summer Games. And Canada, no one expected you to live up to China's opening ceremonies, but come on. That was PATHETIC.

3. Dawgs drop another one on the road after leading at half. If this team had any depth, we would be sitting near .500 in SEC. Instead, we are 3-8. Fox's team will turn that around next year.

4. Georgia baseball season kicks off this weekend. Georgia is ranked #22 and has one of the toughest schedules in the country. It is an even year, but I don't see this Georgia team having the success that the '08 team had.

5. The quarterback battle is coming into focus. Logan Gray is staying at QB, which I think is a mistake. I would be very surprised if Aaron Murray did not win the job, but if Mettenberger really has improved as much as they say, there may be a real dog fight (no pun intended).

6. 9-3. That is my prediction for the worst record they Georgia will have next fall. Easy schedule combined with 10 of 11 starters back on offense and a new defensive scheme = New Year's Day Bowl. Count on it.

What’s on My Mind – The NCAA is Dumb, Winter Sucks, and Other Thoughts

1. The NCAA is talking about some stupid rule changes for football.
a. The NCAA wants to band players writing messages on eye-black. As much as I dislike Tebow, I had no problem with him putting bible verses on his eye black. This seems very stupid to me.
b. The excessive celebration penalty would cause a touchdown to be taken off of the board. This is ridiculous. The 15 yard penalty was already a judgment call that could have potential major impact on a game (see the Georgia-LSU game last year). Now you want to make a judgment call take points off the board. NCAA, please see this is a dumb idea.
2. The Winter Olympics are starting…and no one really cares. In my opinion, the Olympics rank third on the most important sporting events of the weekend behind the Daytona 500 and the NBA All-Star game. No matter how much figure skating NBC puts on over the next few weeks, I still don’t care.
3. What a letdown for the Georgia basketball team against Auburn the other night. How can a team that has victories over 4 ranked opponents and took #2 Kentucky to the brink lose by 21 to Auburn? Mark Fox has made major strides with the program, but we still have a lot of work to do.
4. Tom Glavine officially retired and joined the Braves front office. I am glad to see Tommy put his anger from last year aside and come back to the Braves. Now, it’s the Atlanta fans’ turn to get off his back. It was an amazing career for Glavine, including 300 wins seen in the video below:

5. Football season is over. Congratulations to the Saints, but when the Falcons’ biggest rival wins the Super Bowl, I kind of get the same feeling as Florida winning the National Championship.

6. 4 weeks til spring practice. Let the talk about Grantham’s D, the quarterback competition, and whether Richt is on the hot seat (which he is NOT) commence.

Random Thoughts from the Columbus Airport

I am stuck at the airport in Columbus, Ohio waiting for my flight home. Here are some thoughts on what has been going on lately:

- G-Day is on the Saturday of The Masters - Throw in the fact that I don't think the game will be on ESPN this year, and we should be back to the normal G-Day crowd of around 5,000.

- Who will be the final coaching hire? - I would still love to bring Travis Jones from the Saints to coach the line but I don't that is going to happen. If we can't get Jones, I would rather get a special teams coach. Grantham, Gardner, and Lakatos will be fine with the defense.

- Da'Rick Rodgers taking his visit to Tennessee - If he switched to UT, I guess it would be fair since we stole Marlon Brown from them on Signing Day last year. But, I really hope Da'Rick is in Athens next fall.

- Signing day is just a couple of weeks away. Barring any major changes, Georgia should end up with around the 10th ranked class in the country. Pretty good considering it is a smaller class and we had a pretty young team last season. The mass exodus leaving Florida with Tebow caused a lot of players to pick the Gators. I've got a feeling a fair number will be transferring after the 2010 season.

- Chan Gailey gets hired by Buffalo - You think Chan can get Reggie Ball to try out for QB? I guess the Bills figured since Georgia is not in the AFC East, Gailey should do alright.

- Despite losing all three games, the Georgia basketball team had 3 of the top 4 teams in the SEC on the ropes to start the SEC schedule. I really wish they could have held on against Mississippi State last Saturday, but clearly they are much better coached team under Mark Fox. Travis Leslie is going to be a big name in a couple of years.

Streit's Quick Thoughts

Here's some things going on in the world:

BOOM! - John Madden has announced his retirement from broadcasting. I would suspect they will continue to make the Madden football games, but I assume this means no more John Madden ads for Vagisil:

Going big time - Matt Stafford makes his late night television debut tonight appearing as a guest on the Jimmy Fallon show. Also appearing tonight, the gorgeous Rachel Mc Adams and the guy who plays the best villain on television, Michael Emerson of "Lost". It would be nice if Stafford gave a shout out to the Dawg Nation, but I highly doubt it.

First place on the line - Georgia baseball hosts the Arkansas Razorbacks in a weekend series in Athens with the overall lead in the SEC on the line. Georgia is ranked #1 in the coaches poll, but they did fall to rival Georgia Tech on Tuesday night. This should be a great battle between the two best teams in the SEC.

Foley Field should see big crowds this weekend

A Family Thing - After being on campus for only a few months, Aaron Murray has already brought the enrollment of the University Georgia up by one. Murray's older brother, Josh, will come to Georgia in the fall and try to walk-on the football team. Josh has spent the past few years playing baseball in the minors for the Brewers. Welcome to the Dawg nation, Josh!

Welcome to the Highlight Factory - Not that I really care about the NBA, but the Hawks begin the 2009 NBA playoffs this weekend by hosting the Miami Heat. You heard that right, the Hawks are HOSTING a playoff series! With Braves off to a good start (until the last 2 nights anyways), the Thrashers playing well down the stretch, and the Falcons coming off a great season, professional sports in Atlanta are finally starting to look good again.

Now Ohio State Fans can hate him too - Former Duke point guard Greg Paulus will be given a shot to win the starting quarterback job at Michigan. Four years away from the gridiron is a long time, but I guess coming off a 3-9 season, Michigan has nothing to lose.

Those Buckeye linebackers are going to hit a little harder than Danny Green.

GO DAWGS!!!

Quick Thoughts

A couple of quick things currently on my mind...

1. The Georgia baseball team swept Tennessee over the weekend and managed to hang on to #1 in 3 of the 4 major polls. Now into its second week, their reign at 1 is now one week longer than Georgia Football's stay at #1 this past fall.

2. We are offering over $2 million a year to try and get Anderson from Missouri to coach the basketball team. Is it just me, or is that sound more like football money than basketball money?

3. Jeremy Longo has been added to the list of injured, meaning we will only have 2 scholarship D-ends for G-Day. Guess we will be seeing a lot of plays made by the likes of Andrew Gully.

4. Texas Tech coach Mike Leach made a player sit on the football field in the snow after practice and study. The Pirate from Lubbock is crazy, but awesome!

5. The 49ers don't want to take Matt Stafford because they think he still has issues with his parents divorce. If anything, the playing field is a good place for him to take out his aggression concerning those issues. As a child of divorce myself, I do not see why this would be an issue.

6. The Braves re-signed Chipper Jones until he is 41, meaning he will most likely retire as a Brave. Thank god they handled this correctly and did not let this turn into another Smoltz situation.

I'll be back later this week with the next entry in the series, Bringing Back Traditions.
