#1 On the Field and in the Depth Chart

Coach Richt has announced that Isaiah Crowell will be the #1 tailback against Coastal Carolina. Why he wasn't first string already is beyond me, but hopefully this means more carries in the coming weeks. Actually, I hope it means less carries this week since the Dawgs should be able to beat Coastal Carolina with a backfield consisting of only guys shorter than 5'8'' (Thomas and Harton).

The reason for the change was on field performance in addition to some injuries for Samuel. And supposedly Carlton Thomas will move to #2 if Samuel can't go. My question is, what the hell happened to Boo Malcome? Wasn't so impressive in practice last season that the coaches considered burning his red shirt when Ealey and King struggled. Now, he can't even take over the third string spot for little Carlton Thomas. Something just doesn't seem right.

Hopefully this is a permanent change. Getting 25 touches for Crowell a game could spell huge dividends for a Georgia team that appears to pass the ball much better out of play action than out of the shotgun.

Offical Post Spring Depth Chart: Instant Reaction

Coach Richt has released the official post spring depth chart and there are definitely some surprises. Here are my thoughts:

Tailback - We all knew Caleb King would be #1 coming out of spring. But Carlton Thomas at 2 and Brandon Harton (all 5'6'' of him) ahead of Ken Malcome? What did Malcome do to piss Coach Richt off? i thought he ran the ball well in the G-Day game. Something just doesn't seem right. But I guess it won't really matter too much once Crowell gets on campus.

Corner - Boykin on one side was a given but the other side was a guess. Sanders Commings has the lead, can he really hold off Branden Smith and the incoming freshmen?

Linebacker - Depth seems to be an issue. I guess it is a good thing that we have a lot of freshmen who could come in at outside linebacker. I also think signing Kent Turene was a big pick up after seeing all the walk-ons in the current depth chart.

Safety - Wow, that position looks pretty weak. I know Ogletree will be a beast at linebacker, but dang, that leaves the cupboard dry.

So what are your thoughts?

2011 Recruiting Wrap Up: Assessing the Depth Chart - Defensive Backs

(This is the final entry in a series examining the depth chart following the completion of the 2011 recruiting season.)

Georgia's defensive backfield looks to return all four players who finished the 2010 season as starters (Boyking, Commings, Rambo, and Ogletree) as well as some experienced upper classmen. The new faces in the secondary could also push for playing time this fall.

Depth Chart - Corner
1. Brandon Boykin, Senior
2. Branden Smith, Junior
3. Sanders Commings, Redshirt Junior
4. Jordan Love, Redshirt Sophomore
5. Damian Swann, Freshman
6. Derek Owens, Sophomore

Analysis
Boykin's decision to return for his senior season should help this group continue to improve in 2011. Sanders Commings was listed as the starter at the end of 2010, but I fully expect Branden Smith to be the starter come August. Jordan Love and Derek Owens both saw limited playing time in 2010 and will look to build on that experience this fall. Freshmen Damian Swann and Nick Marshall could also push for playing time with good summer camps. I expect freshman Devin Bowman to redshirt.

Depth Chart - Safety
1. Alec Ogletree, Sophomore
2. Bacarri Rambo, Redshirt Junior
3. Shawn Williams, Junior
4. Jakar Hamilton, Senior
5. Corey Moore, Freshman
6. Chris Sanders, Freshman

Analysis
2010 was a disappointing year for Georgia's safeties. Bacarri Rambo failed to play at the same level he did in 2009 and transfer Jakar Hamilton did not live up to his reputation as "the hitman". The lone bright spot was true freshman Alec Ogletree, who will now be looked to as the leader of the group. Shawn Williams is the only other experienced safety on the roster, so expect immediate contributions from highly touted freshman Corey Moore. Chris Sanders may also see playing time, but I do not expect Quintavious Harrow to play much at safety (though we may see him on special teams.)

2011 Recruiting Wrap Up: Assessing the Depth Chart - DL and Linebacker

The combination recruits and the return of players from redshirt should mean that the defensive line and linebackers will look a lot different than they did last fall. For the purposes of the depth charts below, I am listing Ray Drew as an outside linebacker and Sterling Bailey at defensive end.

Depth Chart - Defensive End
1. Deangelo Tyson, Senior
2. Abry Jones, Junior
3. Derrick Lott, Sophomore
4. Garrison Smith, Sophomore
5. Sterling Bailey, Freshman

Analysis
With John Jenkins manning the nose guard position, Deangelo Tyson will be able to move back to his natural position of defensive end. When we go to a four down linemen set, he will shift back into a D tackle role. Tyson and Jones should be solid at DE, both having played significantly since their freshman seasons. Derrick Lott showed some flashes last season and Garrison Smith should see the field alot this fall. I think Sterling Bailey may be able to crack the rotation, particularly in pass situations opposite a linebacker playing up on the line.

Depth Chart - DT
1. John Jenkins, Junior
2. Kwame Geathers, Sophomore

Analysis
Jenkins will fit perfectly into Grantham's 3-4. Hoepfully Geathers has continued to develop in the off-season. Freshman Chris Mayes is also expected to play the nose guard position, but i have heard rumors that he may not qualify and be headed to GMC.

Depth Chart - OLB
1. Cornelius Washington, Junior
2. Ray Drew, Freshman
3. TJ Stripling, Sophomore
4. Reuben Faloughi, Sophomore
5. Dexter Morant, Redshirt Freshman

Analysis
I expect that Jarvis Jones may also see significant playing time at outside linebacker. I expect Ray Drew to take a starting spot in camp this summer and Cornelius Washington to be the beast we thought he could be. TJ Stripling is coming off that horrendous knee injury, but if healthy, could be in for a breakout season.

Depth Chart - ILB
1. Christian Robinson, Junior
2. Jarvis Jones, Redshirt Sophomore
3. Richard Samuel, Redshirt Junior
4. Mike Gilliard, Junior
5. Amarlo Herrera, Freshman

Analysis
The departure of Marcus Dowtin has opened up a spot in the starting lineup for Jarvis Jones (he may have taken it anyway). After sitting out a year healing from a neck injury, the former five star recruit could really make an impact in the SEC this fall. Christian Robinson was solid last year and will only get better. I am also excited to finally see Richard Samuel where he belongs. Most Georgia fans have never seen him on defense, but let me say that you are in for a treat. Amarlo Herrera and Kent Turene could also see the field this fall.

2011 Recruiting Wrap Up: Assessing the Depth Chart - OL

Georgia pulled in 6 new recruits who will be used on the offensive line in the next couple of years. But unlike many other positions, I do not expect any of these players to make much of an impact this season. My hope is that at least four of the six can be redshirted this fall.

Depth Chart - Tackle
1. Trinton Sturdivant, Redshirt Senior -LT
2. Kenaroius Gates, Sophomore - RT
3. Brent Benedict, Redshirt Freshman
4. AJ Harmon, Junior
5. Watts Dantzler, Freshman

Analysis
Sturdivant is set at the left tackle position while it looks like Gates will move over into the right tackle position. If any of the true freshman make an impact, I would give the edge to Watts Dantzler and his 6'7'', 315 lbs body.

Depth Chart - Guard
1. Cordy Glenn, Senior - RG
2. Dallas Lee, Sophomore - LG
3. Justin Anderson, Senior
4. Kolton Houston, Redshirt Sophomore
5. David Andrews, Freshman

Analysis
The left guard position is mist likely the only open competition on the offensive line headed into spring camp. Justin Anderson has been moved around so much that I can't put him as the favorite to start. I doubt any of the freshmen make an impact at guard this fall.

Depth Chart - Center
1. Ben Jones, Senior
2. Chris Burentte, Sophomore
3. Ty Frix, Senior (starter at Long Snapper)

Analysis
This has been Ben Jones' job for the last three seasons and that will not change this fall. Look for Burnette to see time as Jones' back up. Ty Frix will hold down the long snapper position again this fall and freshman Nathan Theus will most likely take over in 2012.

2011 Recruiting Wrap Up: Assessing the Depth Chart - WR and TE

The dawgs picked up 5 players who are expected to have big impact in the passing game. Here are a look at the wide receiver and tight end depth charts.

Depth Chart - Wide Receiver
1. Tavarres King, Redshirt Junior
2. Marlon Brown, Junior
3. Malcolm Mitchell, Freshman
4. Rantavious Wooten, Junior
5. Israel Troupe, Redshirt Junior
6. Michael Bennet, Redshirt Freshman
7. Chris Conley, Freshman
8. Justin Scott-Wesley, Freshman
9. Sanford Seay, Freshman

Analysis
With the departure of AJ Green and Kris Durham, the only spot that appears to be guaranteed is Taverres King's. Marlon Borwn came in as a five star recruit, but has failed to live up to the hype at this point. I think he will be given every chance to start and will most likely hold that job come opening day. After that, it is a wide open race. Wooten showed flashes in 2009 but almost completely disappeared last fall. Minus one touchdown catch against Auburn, Israel Troupe's career has been almost non-existent. And I have heard much about Michael Bennett. As for the incoming freshman, I expect at least two of the four to see playing time this fall. Malcolm Mitchell appears to have the talent to make an impact soon. Chris Conley enrolled early and will have a leg up on the other guys. Scott-Wesley may see action as well. I fully expect Seay to redshirt.

Depth Chart - Tight End
1. Orson Charles, Junior
2. Aron White, Redshirt Senior
3. Arthur Lynch, Redshirt Sophomore
4. Jay Rome, Freshman

Analysis
I originally expect Jay Rome to redshirt this fall, but with the permanent move of Bruce Figgins to fullback, my outlook has changed. i expect we will see a lot of multi tight end sets, particularly with Orson Charles lined up as more of a slot receiver than a tight end. Figgins was the best blocking tight end on the roster, so if Rome shows his blocking skills off early, he may pass Lynch for playing time.

2011 Recruiting Wrap Up: Assessing the Depth Chart - Running Backs

Depth Chart - Tailbacks
1. Isaiah Crowell, Freshman
2. Washaun Ealey, Junior
3. Caleb King, Redshirt Senior
4. Ken Malcome, Redshirt Freshman
5. Carlton Thomas, Redshirt Junior

Analysis
Based on Coach Richt's comments and the performance of Ealey and King in 2010, right now I have to believe Isaiah Crowell will be the starting running back come September. The coaching staff has made it clear that they will not have another case of "Knowshirting" and Crowell will definitely get his touches with the first team in summer practice. Even if Crowell earns the #1 spot, I expect Ealey, King, and Malcome to be part of the offensive gameplan. G-Day may help determine the pecking order for these guys. I am sure that the days of Carlton Thomas running the ball up the middle should be over.

Depth Chart - Fullbacks
1. Bruce Figgins, Redshirt Senior
2. Alexander Ogletree, Sophomore
3. Josh Sailors, Senior and Kevin Lanier, Redshirt Sophomore

Analysis
The decision to move Figgins fulltime could potentially pay huge dividends come this fall. During his time as OC, Bobo has used the fullback in the passing game a lot. Figgins will be perfect in the role. Zander Ogletree proved to be worth his scholarship last fall and will see plenty of playing time as well. Beyond Ogletree and Figgins, walkons make up the remainder of the fullback depth chart.

2011 Recruiting Wrap Up: Assessing the Depth Chart - Quarterback

*This is the first in a multi-part series examining the Georgia depth chart following National Signing Day.

Depth Chart
1. Aaron Murray, Redshirt Sophomore
2. Hutson Mason, Sophomore
3. Christian Lemay, Freshman (early enrollee)

Assessment
Aaron Murray had an amazing freshman season in 2010 that will go down as one of the best overall seasons for a quarterback in Georgia history. Unfortunately, a bad performance in the Liberty Bowl prevented him from setting a number of Georgia single season records. He sits comfortably atop the quarterback depth chart and will most likely be there for the next 2-3 seasons.

Hutson Mason played sparringly last fall, however he did throw for a touchdown on hist first career pass. He will head into the spring and summer at #2 on depth chart, but will battle with Christian LeMay to keep that spot. The highlights of Lemay in high school show he has all the skills of a true dual-threat quarterback. While he could take the backup job from Mason, my hope is that the coach staffing will redshirt him, leaving him with atleast two years to be a starter in Athens. Of course, all that could change if (heaven forbid) Murray got hurt.

Friday Thoughts and a Few Links

Well, it has been quite an interesting week for the Dawg nation and the college football landscape as a whole. From the Mettenberger situation to the NFL draft, there are a lot of interesting stories going on right now. Here are my thoughts as well as some links for your Friday:

- Coach Richt has released the post spring depth chart and the biggest story is Aaron Murray on top of the depth chart at quarterback. This was all a forgone conclusion after the Meetenberger dismissal, but I am glad that Richt stated that Murray would have been #1 even if Mett was still around. Here's the quote from Richt (courtesy of David Hale):
“I’m not out to hurt anybody worse than they might have been hurt to this point, but Aaron would have been the No. 1 quarterback.”

- Check out the full post spring depth chart HERE.

- Christian Robinson at the top of the linebacking depth chart was a surprise. As Earl said to me this morning:

Good to see Robinson listed as a #1 (over Dowtin no less). Seems like he's using his smarts and work ethic to move up the depth charts. Dowtin will see plenty of playing time b/c he's athletically gifted, so I hope Robinson being ahead of him motivates him. But in no way do I expect Robinson to lose his job to Dowtin b/c I don't expect a guy like Robinson to lose his job to anyone once he's secured it.

We have so many LBs. It's great.

- The NFL Draft began last night with a new format of having the first round on Thursday night. As expected, there were no Georgia players taken in round 1.

- Tim Tebow went #25 overall to the Denver Broncos. There has been much debate about how his skills transfer to the NFL. I am not sure what to think at this point, but I certainly do not think he should have gone in round 1. I also can't fathom the idea of Tebow sharing a backfield with Knowshon. It just makes me a little queasy. Here is Smart Football's take on Tebow going to Denver

- Why did the Falcons pass on Dez Bryant?!? I know they needed a linebacker, but when a projected top 10 pick falls that far, I think sometimes you just have to take the best player available. I really wish Derrick Morgan had continued to fall as well. In the end, the Falcons appear to have gotten the player they wanted all along.

- What is it about Florida guys kissing other guys?!? (Even if it is your twin.)

- I received a pretty big response to my SEC expansion post yesterday. It seems most of you think that the SEC would go after other high profile school like Florida State. When I wrote the post, I only considered schools not currently part of a BCS conference and Big East teams (because if the Big 10 pulls anyone from the Big East, it would most likely disband). Here's Michigan blogger MGoBlog's look at what the new Big Ten could look like.

- And lastly, here is an interesting read I found on Sports Illustrated's SI Vault, which allows you to view articles from any previous SI Issue. This is the article that appeared in Sports Illustrated following Georgia's victory over Notre Dame to win the 1980 National Championship.

Have a great weekend and GO DAWGS!!!

Pre-Signing Day Depth Chart - Defense

With new defensive coordinator Todd Grantham bringing the 3-4 defense to Athens, it is hard to know exactly what Georgia's defense will look like this fall. The early exits of Reshad Jones and Rennie Curran paired with the graduations of Bryan Evans, Prince Miller, Jeff Owens, and Geno Atkins means there are at least 6 starting jobs open. Here is my best guess at the current Georgia depth chart, before signing day and spring practice.

DE - Justin Houston, Demarcus Dobbs
- I expect both players to be starters under Grantham's system, however we may see Justin Houston move to a linebacker hybrid position.

DT - Deangelo Tyson
- The graduations of Kade Weston, Atkins, and Owens leaves Tyson as the only experienced tackle the Dawgs have left.

ILB - Akeem Dent, Daryl Gamble
- Dent should have one of these spots, but Gamble may move outside.

OLB - Marcus Dowtin, ???
- Dowtin will occupy one spot but the other spot is anyone's guess. Christian Robinson played well at the end of last season.

CB - Brandon Boykin, Branden Smith
- Both players should improve in 2010. Look for Smith to really develop into a shut down corner.

S - Bacarri Rambo, Jakar Hamilton
- I am so excited to see what Rambo can do as a starter. The defense was clearly better when he was on the field last season. At the other spot, I will give the early edge to the Juco transfer Hamilton, though a healthy Quentin Banks and freshman Alec Ogltree will also push for playing time.

Pre-Signing Day Depth Chart - Offense

National Signing day is a week away and soon we will know who the new additions to the Georgia football family will be. But before signing day and eventually spring practice, we should still have a pretty good idea who will be lining up for Georgia opening day in 2010. Here's a quick look at the Georgia offensive depth chart heading into National Signing day.

QB - Open
- This job is open right now, but I expect Aaron Murray to take hold of the position.

RB - Caleb King/Washaun Ealey
- Both backs are young and finished the '09 season playing great.

FB - Shaun Chapas
- Chapas and fellow senior Fred Munzenmaier should be a major force in the Georgia running game.

WR - AJ Green and Tavarres King
- Georgia is loaded at receiver. Behind Green and King, the Dawgs will have Marlon Brown, Rontavious Wooten, and Israel Troupe. And don't forget that Kris Durham will also be back from injury.

TE - Aron White
- Georgia may have the strongest TE crew in the country. In addition to White, Orson Charles is a major threat in the passing game. And with the return of Bruce Figgins, Georgia gets its best blocking tight end back.

LT - Clint Boling
- Boling is the most versatile player on the Georgia line, but really found his home at left tackle last year. If Trinton Sturdivant can come back again, he will be able to provide some relief for Boling.

LG - Cord Glenn
- Entering his third year as a starter, Glenn will only continue to improve.

C - Ben Jones
- An absolute beast in the middle, he may be on the pre-season All-SEC team.

RG - Chris Davis
- Senior guard who is backed up by Justin Anderson.

RT - Josh Davis
- Played great after stepping in when Clint Boling moved to left tackle.

I personally feel Georgia may have one of the best all around offenses in the SEC. If Murray can step into the QB role, Georgia could be an offensive juggernaut in 2010.
