Pro Day for Green, Houston, and others

Georgia will host an on-campus pro day tomorrow at 10:00 AM to showcase former players who will be available in the upcoming NFL Draft. The day will be highlighted by early entrants AJ Green and Justin Houston, but will also be important players like Kris Durham who were not invited to the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis last month. Here is the full list of participants:

Clint Boling, Shaun Chapas, Vance Cuff, Chris Davis, Josh Davis, Akeen Dent, Demarcus Dobbs, Kris Durham, Darryl Gamble, Chad Gloer, A.J. Green, Justin Houston, Derek Rich, and Kiante Tripp

AJ Green is the biggest name, and the receiver from Summerville is most likely going to be taken in the Top 5. There has been a lot of press covering AJ since he made his decision to leave early. Here is a video that takes a look at the workouts he has been doing to prepare:

For those interested, you can watch the Pro Day online at ESPN3.com.

Good luck to all the former Dawgs tomorrow!

Champ is out, but what about Charles?

I started a new job this week and have not had a chance to write much. A lot of has happenned over the last week, including Georgia finally hiring a new linebackers coach, Aaron Murray hurting his ankle, and the Tennessee athletics program going to hell. A few weeks ago, I write an article explaining why I thought Champ Bailey would be a perfect player for the Falcons to sign in free agency. That dream ended this week when Bailey signed a four year extension to stay in Denver. With Champ out of the equation, I see another former Bulldog moving to the top of the list of players the Falcons could target.

That player is defensive end Charles Johnson. Charles Johnson played for Georgia from 2004 - 2006. He was drafted in the third round of the 2007 NFL draft. After recording only 10 sacks in first three seasons in the league, Johnson had a breakout season in 2010. Taking the place of Julius Peppers as the leader of Carolina's pass rush, Johnson tallied 11.5 sacks and had 62 total tackles. The Carolina Panthers decided to place their franchise tag on a center (REALLY?!?!) meaning Johnson could become a free agent. While Johnson's price tag may be higher that Bailey's, he is only 24 and appears to be entering the prime of his career.

It sure would be nice to see the Hawkinsville native back in his home state rushing the quarterback opposite of John Abraham. Let's bring this Dawg home!

Dawgs Leaving Early Under Richt – Part 2

From 2005 until 2009, the Georgia Bulldogs have seen 8 players forgo their remaining eligibility and enter the NFL draft. Here is a look at those who left early during the second half of Richt’s first decade in Athens.

2005

Leonard Pope – 3rd Round by Arizona – Pope left Georgia following the SEC Championship season and was drafted by a pass happy Arizona Cardinals team. And while receivers like Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald put up huge numbers catching passes, Pope never really took off. He has played the last 2 seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Verdict – Bad Decision – Pope’s size was amazing, but one more year in Athens could have really helped hone his skills. He has not lived up to the success that former Georgia tight ends Randy McMichael and Ben Watson had.

2006

Danny Ware – Undrafted – Ware bounced around before finally finding a home with the New York Giants. Ware has become an important special teams player for the Giants and earned a Super Bowl ring in 2008. Now going by DJ, Ware’s career has lasted longer than the backs he was behind at Georgia.
Verdict – Good Decision – With Thomas Brown, Kregg Lumpkin, and Knowshon Moreno on the roster, Ware would have seen very few carries in 2007. He went undrafted, but has made a nice place for himself on the Giants.

Charles Johnson – 3rd Round by Carolina – Johnson has gradually earned more playing time for the Panthers and this year took over for the departed Julius Peppers at defensive end. His career is on an uptick, even if the Panthers are horrible.
Verdict – Good Decision – Johnson was a beast and after watching teammate Quentin Moses struggle after returning for his senior season, Johnson leaving early was a no-brainer.

2008

Asher Allen – 3rd Round by Minnesota – Allen struggled to see the field much during his rookie season for the Vikings, but continued to improve. He earned a starting role this fall, totaling 57 tackles and 2 interceptions.
Verdict – Bad Decision – Allen could have increased his draft status in 2009 by returning to school. He was good, but not great.

Knowshon Moreno – 1st Round (#12 overall) by Denver – Moreno has struggled with injuries for much of his first two seasons, but has managed to put up 1,100+ yards both years. In 2010, he solidified his role as Denver’s starting tailback and has also become a weapon catching passes.
Verdict – Good Decision – He was the first back taken and has had two relatively successful seasons despite injuries. Coming back for an additional year would have done nothing but add wear and tear to his body.

Matthew Stafford – 1st Round (#1 overall) by Detroit – Going to a horrible Lions team, Stafford expected to get hit. He has been hit so much that he has failed to stay healthy, ending both of his first two seasons on IR. He has shown promise in the 13 games he has played in.
Verdict – Good Decision – There is an argument that going to the NFL to get pummeled and constantly being injured was a bad decision. But Stafford most likely would not have been the #1 pick in 2009, meaning he would not have gotten the $40+ million from Detroit. Plus, he would not have done this:

2009

Rennie Curran – 3rd Round by Tennessee – Curran played sparingly during his rookie season, though his play time increased as the season progressed.
Verdict – Good Decision – As Curran stated when he made his decision, he was not going to get any taller by staying another year in Athens. The only way he would earn a starting role in the NFL is by playing his way up the later. Starting as soon as possible was the right move for him.

Reshad Jones – 5th Round by Miami – Jones appeared in 13 of the Dolphins’ 16 games this fall, recording 21 tackles. His best game of the year came when he recorded both his first career sack and interception on November 20 against Tennessee.
Verdict – Bad Decision – Jones had an amazing combination of both size and talent. He improved each year he was at Georgia and one more season could have improved his draft status significantly.

All told, there have been 16 players that have left Georgia early for the Draft during the Richt era. AJ Green’s decision is a no brainer, but hope players like Justin Houston and Brandon Boykin consider the past experiences of these Georgia pl

The Countdown 2010: 5 Days To Go, Garrison Hearst

5: Garrison Hearst, TB #5 (1990-1992)

Garrison Hearst is a well noted Georgia Bulldog, but the high achieving level he attained at Georgia is often underappreciated. The Lincolnton, GA native is the #2 career rusher for the bulldogs, was a dominating, powerhouse back in the early 1990’s, and his name is emblazoned all over Georgia’s record books.

Hearst came to Georgia in 1990, and would become a leading force on the field in the SEC. Hearst would only start just over half the games his freshman and sophomore seasons, but would garner respectable numbers during both years. He would be the leading rusher for Georgia all three years he played, and was also the leading scorer on the team for the ’91 and ’92 seasons.

clip of Hearst's 50+ yard TD run in 1992 versus Ole Miss*

His junior season in 1992 was of near epic proportions. Georgia would win 10 games (with 2 close losses), and finish the season ranked #8, topped off by a Citrus Bowl victory over the Doormat of the SEC (commonly referred to as Ohio State).

Highlights of Hearst from the 1993 Citrus Bowl versus Ohio State*

Hearst would gain 1,547 rushing yards that season, and a total of 1,910 all purpose yards (placing him second in school and SEC history), as well as being the only other rusher besides Herschel to gain 1,500 yards in a season. Hearst would also set the SEC record for touchdowns in a season (21), rushing touchdowns in season (19), average gain per rush (6.8), and most points scored in a season (126). His rushing TD and average gain records still remain SEC records today.

Hearst’s national notoriety skyrocketed as he won the Doak Walker Award (given to the nation’s top running back), was voted a consensus All-American, and finished 3rd in the Heisman balloting (finishing behind Gino Torretta and Marshall Faulk).

Hearst would finish his career with 3,232 rushing yards, 3,934 total yards, 16 - 100 yard rushing games, and 35 touchdowns over 3 seasons.

Hearst would go on to be the 3rd overall pick in the 1993 NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals. While sustaining injuries and health problems that limited his playing, Hearst played for 12 seasons, appeared in 2 Pro Bowls, and twice won NFL Comeback Player of the Year.

Will Prince Miller follow in Dannell Ellerbe's footsteps?

In 2009, former Georgia linebacker Dannell Ellerbe signed as undrafted free agent with the Baltimore Ravens. After impressing coaches in training camp and on special teams, Ellerbe earned significant time on the Ravens defense totaling 41 tackles and an interception. This summer, he is in a battle with Jameel McClain for the starting inside linebacking position along side Ray Lewis.

This spring, another former Georgia player signed with Baltimore after going undrafted. That player was Prince Miller, who turned in a fantastic punt return in his first NFL preseason game:

I hope the Prince Miller story in Baltimore turns out as well as the Dannell Ellerbe story has.

Georgia Pro-Day 2010: A Defensive Minded Affair?

Spring practice has begun and while the current Georgia Bulldogs are using these next few weeks as their first official work for the 2010 season, a number of now former Bulldogs are using this time as their last chance to work out on the Georgia practice field. In a few weeks, Georgia will host its annual Pro Day, a chance for those players who are eligible for this year's NFL draft to showcase their talents in a familiar environment. Last year, Georgia's Pro Day was a show case on the offensive side of the football. Future first rounders Matthew Stafford and Knowshon Moreno along with Mohammed Massaquoi (2nd round) were the stars on display. Dannell Ellerbe, Corvey Irvin, Jarrius Wynn, and Asher Allen would also go onto pro careers, but the defense was definitely outshone by the offense.

The 2010 Pro Day will be a much different story for the Georgia Bulldogs. There will no first rounders in this class and the majority of those looking to further their careers will be on the defensive side of the ball. Michael Moore and Vince Vance has nice careers at Georgia, but I do not expect to hear their names called on draft day. Here is a quick look at the players who are looking to make a name for themselves at Georgia's Pro Day:

- Rennie Curran, LB - The undersized linebacker was a tackling machine at Georgia. There has been concern about his size, but the numbers speak for themselves.
- Reshad Jones, S - Jones has all the tools to be a great NFL player. He improved his tackling in 2009 and should make for a nice mid to late round pick up.
- Jeff Owens, DT - One of Georgia's three outstanding defensive tackles, Owens returned from an ACL injury to put together a decent senior year.
- Geno Atkins, DT - Undersized for DT, Atkins can play some at defensive end as well. An impressive workout could push him into the second round of the draft.

Good luck to all of these former Bulldogs at the next level. We look forward to you continuing the proud Bulldog tradition on Sundays.

Good Luck Rennie!

Junior linebacker Rennie Curran has decided to leave Georgia early and head to the NFL draft. Despite is short stature, Curran made a hell of an impact during the last three seasons. Curran made his splash as a freshman on the 2007 team that finished number two in the nation. Here are the highlights from his freshman season:

During the 2008 season, Rennie became the leader of the Georgia defense. He seemed to always be "around the ball", making big plays including forcing a fumble at the goal line against South Carolina that preserved a 14-7 lead and laying a huge hit on Rudy Carpenter to set the tone in the victory over Arizona State:

Rennie was one of the bright spots on this year's defense as he led the SEC in tackles and was named All-SEC. Image what the season would have been like if Curran had not tipped this pass to seal the win against South Carolina:

We wish the "Liberian Nightmare" good luck in the NFL.

Reshad Jones will now throw punches in the NFL

As expected, redshirt junior safety Reshad Jones is leaving Athens early for the green pastures of the NFL. Since Jones almost left after the 2008 season, this comes as a surprise to exactly no one within the Bulldog Nation. After redshirting in 2006, the Dawg Nation was introduced to Jones during the season opener against Oklahoma State in 2007. Jones famously drew a fifteen yard personal foul penalty for punching an Oklahoma State player in the chest. The player (I can't remember who it was) went down like he had just been shot with a shotgun. The next three years were filled with ups (game securing interception in the victory over South Carolina in 2008) and downs (numerous missed tackles in the 2008 loss to Georgia Tech).

Jones coverage skills were decent and he tallied a fair share of interceptions, including this one handed pick in the victory over Georgia Tech this year:

Jones was known as a heavy hitter, a reputation that caused him to be a target of officials. This hit in the Oklahoma State game this season gave Jones the label of a head hunter (even though the hit was legal) and led to a number of bad calls against Georgia this year:

Jones leaves Athens after a successful career, though he never quite lived up to the 5 star talent he was evaluated as out of high school. We wish the best of luck to Reshad at the next level and hope to see him laying more hits like this one in the years to come:

DANNELL ELLERBE MAKES A SPLASH FOR RAVENS

As we talked about back in August, former Georgia linebacker was impressing the Ravens staff and linebacker corp, especially since they signed him as a an undrafted free agent (he ended up being the only rookie free agent the Ravens signed).

On Sunday in his third start against the Raiders, Ellerbe got his first career interception just before halftime, and it resulted in a TD by Willis McGahee.

Ellerbe then recovered a fumble in Ravens territory.

Ravens Head Coach John Harbaugh said Ellerbe's performance was amazing and the difference in the game.

In a lockeroom interview for Sportscenter on ESPN, Ray Lewis also gave high praise to Ellerbe for his efforts.

This is fantastic for Ellerbe. It's always great to see a Dawg succeed, but it is especially sweet since Ellerbe was overlooked in the draft. Despite his history injuries, I was definitely surprised that he didn't at least get taken in one of the late rounds.

Good luck to Ellerbe and I hope his hard work continues to raise his status in the NFL.

DAMN GOOD DAWG.

The Cover Curse Strikes Again

A little over a year ago I wrote this story about the myth surrounding the Cover Curse that had plagued athletes appearing on the cover of Sports Illustrated and the Madden Series of video games. We all know how that worked out for Dawgs in 2008 and already early into the fall of 2009, we have seen the curse rear its ugly head once again, this time taking down both the coverboys from SI and Madden.

Oklahoma State appeared on the cover of the Sports Illustrated College Football Preview Issue as one of four teams that were considered programs on the rise. Another team appearing on the cover was the Oregon Ducks, who promptly dropped their season opener to Boise State. Oklahoma State however, lived up to the hype in their week one matchup with Dawgs. The victory coupled with Oklahoma's loss to BYU landed Oklahoma State back on the cover of SI following the first week of the college football season.

But this past Saturday, Oklahoma State was upset at home by the Houston Cougars. With Oklahoma rolling in week 2 and Sam Bradford making good progress, it looks like the Sooners will be back on top of the football world in Oklahoma pretty soon.

This year's version of Madden NFL had not one but two cover athletes, Larry Fitzgerald of the Arizona Cardinals and Troy Polamalu of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
As defending world champions, the Steelers opened the 2009 NFL season on Thursday. Things were going well for Polamalu against the Tennessee Titans, with a couple of tackles for a loss and an interception. But before the night was over, he would injure his knee and will be out for the next few weeks.

If I am Matt Ryan or AJ Green, I pray that SI and Madden keep them off the covers of their products.

Former Bulldogs who have been named Super Bowl MVP: Jake Scott of the Miami Dolphins, Terrell Davis of the Denver Broncos, and Hines Ward of the Pittsburgh Steelers

Jake Scott had 2 interceptions in Miami's Super Bowl VII win against the Washington Redskins.

Terrell Davis had 157 yards rushing and was the first player in Super Bowl history to score three rushing TDs during Super Bowl XXXII.

Hines Ward had 5 catches for 123 yards and a touchdown in the Steelers' Super Bowl XL victory.
The University of Georgia is the only school with three former players who have been Super Bowl MVPs.

Ellerbe Making An Impact At Ravens Camp

I forget which blog I originally saw this link on, but this article from Mike Peterson at the Baltimore Sun is a fantastic thing to see about a loyal Dawg, but unfortunately one that went undrafted. The Carroll County Times in Maryland also wrote another article here about Ellerbe's efforts in camp thus far.

Great quotes from Terrell Suggs on Ellerbe's talent in the Sun article, and Ellerbe speaks in both articles on how going undrafted has affected him.

Make sure to check it out, and let's hope the best for Ellerbe.

Damn Good Dawg.

Rushing touchdowns scored by running back Garrison Hearst in 1992, and SEC record. Hearst finished third in the Heisman voting that year and went on to a successful NFL career with the Arizona Cardinals and San Francisco 49ers. The video below is a 96 yard touchdown run by Hearst against the New York Jets. This run came in overtime and gave the 49ers a 36-30 victory.

Knowshon Enjoying Life as a Rookie

I tuned into the 49ers-Broncos preseason game to get a glimpse of Knowshon Moreno's first NFL action. He looked good on his first couple of carries and still had his run back to the huddle after getting tackled. But after throwing a block on the 3rd Kyle Orton interception of the night (it was only the 2nd quarter), he left with a leg injury. I guess he has found out the tough part of life in the NFL pretty quick. Earl also made me aware that Knowshon is appearing in a series of Reebok ads about life as a rookie at training camp and after seeing them I must say they are both pretty fun. Check out the videos below.

The Countdown 2009: 57 Days to Go

Jersey number for former linebacker Mo Lewis, who played for the Dawgs from 1987-1990. Lewis would go onto to a Pro Bowl career in the NFL. Lewis is most famous for making the hit below on Patriots QB Drew Bledsoe in 2001 that knocked him out for the remainder of the season. This allowed a low round draft pick from Michigan by the name of Tom Brady take over and the rest is history.

Slummin' it with Quincy

***UPDATE - Quincy was arrested today. I started writing this article last week and this was completely random. Check out the story here.

Quincy Carter spent three years as the starting quarterback at The University of Georgia from 1998 - 2000. When I heard a couple of weeks ago that he was once again trying to resurrect his career, this time in low level arena league football, I decided to take a closer look at this fallen Bulldog star. Here is a look at the rise and fall of Lavonya Quintelle "Quincy" Carter.

High School Legend to Minor League Washout
In the fall of 1995, Quincy Carter led his Southwest Dekalb team to the Georgia AAAA State Championship over future Bulldog Brett Millican and the Parkview Panthers. The star QB committed to play football at Georgia Tech however he would never take a snap for the Yellow Jackets. The Chicago Cubs made Carter the 52nd overall pick in the 1996 Amateur Draft and he quickly began his baseball career. After hitting only .215 in 55 games his first season, Carter failed to improve over the next two seasons and found himself out of baseball in 1998, having never hit above .248.

Quarterback for the Georgia Bulldogs (1998-2000)
When Quincy Carter decided to restart his football career, he decided to stay away from the school he originally committed to (Georgia Tech) and instead headed to rival Georgia. Quincy would win a highly contested battle for the starting quarterback job (beating out the likes of Nate Hybl who would later start at Oklahoma and Daniel Cobb who would later start at Auburn). Carter enjoyed a successful freshman season under coach Jim Donnan leading the Bulldogs to a 9-3 record and a Peach Bowl victory over Virginia. Carter's signature win was a 28-27 upset of #6 ranked LSU in which Carter passed for 318 yards and two touchdowns. 1999 was another successful season for Carter as the Bulldogs went 8-4 and beat Purdue on New Year's Day in the Outback Bowl. Expectations were high for Carter's junior season, as he was on early Heisman watch lists and the Dawgs were ranked in the top 10. After a win over Georgia Southern, the Dawgs headed to South Carolina to take on a Gamecocks team that had not won a game in 1999. And that was the beginning of the end for Carter at Georgia:

Carter was never the same and ended his career on the bench with an injury. Rumors swirled around Athens that Carter was actually caught with drugs and that is why he was not playing. Coach Jim Donnan was fired and Quincy announced he was leaving for the NFL after his junior season, much to the liking of most in the Bulldog Nation.

Quincy in the NFL: The Trouble with Big D

Just as he was a second round pick in the baseball draft years before, Carter was taken as the 53rd overall pick in the second round of the 2001 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys. Following the retirement of legend Troy Aikman, Carter found himself as the starting quarterback of the most popular team in football. He would have a successful rookie season, however he lost his starting job the following year to Chad Hutchinson. Carter would regain his job just prior to the 2002 playoffs, where he led the Cowboys to a victory over the Cardinals. Under new Coach Bill Parcells, Carter led the Cowboys to a 10-6 record and another playoff appearance in 2003 but that would be his last year as a Cowboy.

Carter was released in the summer of '04 amidst rumors of failed drug tests. Carter denied the charge, but the Cowboys official release stated he was release because of a failed drug test and poor attitude. Carter signed with the Jets and backed up Chad Pennington until once again, drugs became his problem. Carter would go to rehab in December 2004 and was released by the Jets in early 2005. He has not played a down in the NFL since.

Canada, Arena Football, and More Issues

Carter signed a contract with the Montreal Alouettes of the CFL in 2006, however only spent a month with the team before being released. He was arrested in the December of 2006 for possession of marijuana, an incident that was famous because a sports talk show host bailed Carter out of prison. Carter landed back on his feet in the minor league for the AFL, A2, signing with the Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings. He had a successful season, but that all came crashing down when he was arrested for drugs by the Shreveport police on October 12, 2007.

Carter's Mug Shot

Carter was released from the team and would later try out for the Miami Dolphins in the summer of 2008.

Where is Quincy Carter today?

In March of 2009, Carter signed a contract with the Abilene Ruff Riders of the Indoor Football League. With a salary of $200 per week plus an additional $50 bonus for wins, Carter is a far cry from his days as the quarterback of "America's Team". Carter has started all six games for the Ruff Riders, leading them to a 3-3 record. Carter has thrown for 1221 yards and 28 touchdowns in those games, including 8 against the San Antonio Stampede Express on April 25. Check out some of the footage here.

Afterword: Slumdog Quincy

For Georgia fans, we will never forget the bright times Carter had on the field. The wins over LSU and Virginia are found memories, but most people tend to remember the bad. Carter will mostly be remembered for the 2000 season, including the 5 picks at South Carolina and the horrible game against Florida. Carter's story is on of wasted potential, a gifted athlete who was drafted in the second round of both major sports but never lived up to his potential.

Knowshon will wear 27

With his Georgia number 24 already worn by former Bulldog Champ Bailey, Knowshon Moreno will be switching numbers when he suits up for the Denver Broncos this fall. Moreno will wear #27, which was last worn by former Bronco Darrent Williams who was killed in a drive by shooting a few years ago. I think Knowshon will honor Williams with his play on the field this fall.

I wondered what it would look like to see Knowhon in a new uniform, and here is what I came up with. It just doesn't look right, does it?

Georgia Bulldogs in the 1st Round of the NFL Draft

Mel Kiper Jr. and Todd McShay of ESPN predict that Matthew Stafford will be the first overall selection in April's 2009 NFL Draft. If Stafford ends up going first overall to the Detroit Lions, he will become the first Georgia player to be selected first overall since 1953. Here is a look at the three Georgia Bulldogs who have been taken #1 overall in the past:

1943 - Frank Sinkwich - Detroit Lions
After winning the Heisman as the nation's best collegiate player in 1942, the Detroit Lions took Sinkwich with the first pick of the 1943 NFL draft. He would have a short, but productive career winning the NFL MVP award in 1944. He would injure his knee serving in the Air Force in 1945 and that ended his playing career.

1945 - Charlie Trippi - Chicago Cardinals
#62 was two-time All American, leading the Bulldogs to a Rose Bowl victory in 1943 and winning the Maxwell Award in 1946. Trippi was drafted first overall in 1945, when he had left the University of Georgia to serve in World War II. Trippi returned to Georgia before joining the Cardinals in the 1947 season. He helped lead them to the NFL Championship, as they defeated the Philadelphia Eagles. Trippi's career would last until 1955, during which time he played running back and quarterback and also acted as the team's punter and kick returner.

1953 - Harry Babcock - New York Giants
Harry Babcock was an offensive end for the Georgia Bulldogs from 1951-1953. He was selected by the New York Giants as wide receiver, where he would play for the next three seasons. His career stats include 16 receptions for 181 yards.

Through out the years, Georgia has had 22 players selected in the first round of the NFL Draft. With Stafford and Knowshon Moreno both expected to go in the first round this year, the list of Georgia players in the NFL continues to grow. Here is the complete list off all Georgia players taken in the first round.
