3rd Annual BNE Pick 'Em: Week 4

We're heading into the meat of the season as conference play commences fully this week. Week 4 showed who is emerging as a contender, and who isn't quite there yet. Bama and Auburn both needed comeback talent to overcome some top opposition, while Tennessee needed two overtimes to beat a sloppy UAB. Meanwhile, no one saw UCLA coming, and neither did Texas as the Bruins ran all over Muschamp's defense. Look for Brown and the Horns to be fired up and ready for the Sooners in a potential upset at the Red River Shootout in Dallas.
I don't Texas and OU fans are normally this close
Minnesota and the Gophers have yet to emerge from their gopher holes, falling to NIU and a 1-3 start. Kudos to Dawgfan17 for being the only one not to take the bait and going with the Huskies. Finally, sitting with a 1-3 is UGA who fell to Mississip(p?)i State. The Dawgs make the trip out to Boulder to face 2-1 Colorado. AJ Green has been practicing during his suspension and shouldn't look green in his first start this season. Its a big morale boost to have AJ back in the game, but the coaching and Rocky Mountain air may have a bigger impact against the Dawgs. I expect UGA to pull off a close one and start winning...I hope.
More intimidating: Uga charging the field, or a 1200 lb buffalo? Mind your step
And now for our top 5 leaders for the week followed by our overall leaders:
  1. Earl's Girl with 187 points & 15-6
  2. AUMav's Picks with 186 points & 17-4
  3. G.D. & woof with 179 points and both going 16-5
  4. calgee & Fresh Catch Shuffle with 178 points and also both going 16-5 . calgee making a dramatic climb out of the bottom. Congratulations!!!
  5. allyugadawg with 176 points & 15-6
Our overall leaders:
  1. woof woof with 1023 points & 73-21
  2. G.D. with 1007 points & 71-23
  3. AUMav's Picks with 993 points & 75-19
  4. allyugadawg with 993 points & 73-21
  5. Hayduke with 985 points & 71-23
With last week's Bottom Feeder of the Week, calgee, skyrocketing out of the bottom of the barrel, we have a new BFotW! This week's BFotW is brought to you by the macabre crew over at www.tombwrecks.blogspot.com, and they are a fitting sponsor given the grave performance of ugadawg13 this week. With a low score total of 134 points and an 11-10 record, ugadawg has managed the second lowest points total and win/loss record thus far. Making picks like these will only dig your grave faster. Just a friendly point of advice: don't pick more than 2 upsets each week unless you somehow have some inside information. If you do, let me know and I'll call my bookie. Otherwise, keep it simple. Hopefully we won't see you down here again. If we do, I'll be picking out your sports-headstone from www.tombwrecks.blogspot.com similar to this one...
Bingo might be more to your talents if things don't pick up
Don't forget to get your picks in by the end of the day! If you get the chance, check out Air Force v. Navy, UGA v. Colorado (of course) and Oregon v. Stanford. I think Oregon might be the best team in the Pac-10 if they can keep their speed attack going. Keep an eye out for the winner of this top 10 match up as they might end up in the BCS title.
I'm drinking the Kool-aid I know, but even an airline is getting on board with the Ducks!

R.I.P. Uga VII

During his short time on the Geoergia sideline, Uga VII compiled a record of 16-7. Georgia will play this weekend without a live mascot. It will be strange to not see a white bulldog lead the Dawgs onto the field.

We'll miss ya Seven.

UGA Halloween

Dear UGA,

We understand you're having a tough season. We know how hard it can be to have a losing season and try to find something to rally around. Heck, look at Vanderbilt for crying out loud, they think the Liberty Bowl is a BCS game (shhh...don't tell them its not). But seriously guys, can you find another way to spark some excitement in the team? We know the "black out" against Auburn worked wonders, and we know today is Halloween, but seriously?

First off, when we saw you run out onto the field, we thought UGA had given up and sent Grambling to play in your place. By the way, Grambling is threatening a copy-right lawsuit, Secondly, how many uniforms changes are y'all going to make? Are you trying to be the Oregon of the SEC? Do you want to be compared to the Pac-10? What happened to tradition, uniformity, and simplicity. The UGA uniform is a classic! We know its trendy, but UGA should not be in the fashion business...you're better than this. Next year, leave the color changes alone.

Sincerely,

The 11 other teams of the SEC

CLEAN, OLD FASHIONED HATE IN THE DOME? CONSPIRACY!

Please do not fool yourself into thinking that moving the 2011 game against the North Avenue Trade School will be an interesting opportunity to play on the national stage and have even more Dawgs at the annual game against the bumble bees.

It is pure conspiracy on the part of Techies to play us on the national stage and have THEM fill the Georgia Dome. How would they do such? Easy.

Dragon*Con.

Dragon*Con has typically lined up with Labor Day weekend each year, and the Trade School will find every wizard, storm trooper, and fat superhero they can to fill the Georgia Dome if the game is moved.

There will probably be an entire section full of Harry Potters and storm troopers, painted bumble bee yellow, will guard the Trade School players on the sideline.

Not only must we not agree to this proposal so all of the supreme nerdiness in the air will not lead to the Trade School having a magical advantage to the game, but we do not need to embarass the game of college football.

If you see Damon Evans, tell him to stop the conspiracy, stop the nerds.

A Bulldawg Legend Passes On

You may not have known it, but a Bulldawg legend passed away on Friday night, August 28.

How exactly is he a legend? Among all those that call themselves Dawgs, there are a group of legends that have shown constant dedication to everything that defines being a Dawg. There are thousands of these legends currently in the Bulldawg Nation, and even more whose spirits are felt every time we walk across North Campus, every time we see a “G,” and every time we enter Sanford Stadium on a Saturday afternoon.

William David Gibbs is one of these legends.

Mr. Gibbs was a devoted Dawg throughout his life, with only his family and serving the Navy ranking ahead. He often expressed how he knew the Navy was superior to anything else, and how being a Dawg was a blessing from above.

Mr. Gibbs is also the father of one of the best friends I’ve ever had, Alex Gibbs. Alex is also a strong supporter, frequent reader, and commenter on this blog.

The stories his dad, Mr. Gibbs, recounted of the many cocktail parties in Jacksonville, and every major event that took place in Athens during the 1980s, mimicked a documentary film rolling through your head while listening to him.

Red and Black ran through the veins of Mr. Gibbs and he made UGA a part of his family. He named his daughter Georgia and his son David Alexander William Gibbs (with the agreement of Mrs. Gibbs, of course), forever tying his family to the University of Georgia.

Mr. Gibbs was always there waiting in line at picture day, he was the first to chastise a nerd for wearing an ugly yellow shirt, and he was the first to welcome a new Dawg to our large extended family.

In his last week, Mr. Gibbs even got a phone call from Coach Vince Dooley to talk about the upcoming season. They both agreed that it was going to be a great one.

I would be remissed if I did not mention the jovial nature of Mr. Gibbs. No one on this Earth had more of a sense of humor, a positive outlook on life, and a determination to live the life to the fullest. He was always prepared to have a great time, and no matter how obvious and comical of a situation you found yourself in, he would always ask, "What ya'll doin?!"

A former co-worker of Mr. Gibb’s said in his remembrance: “I know David will keep the ice chest cold and full, awaiting each of us to join him one day.”

Mr. Gibbs did more than just define what it meant to be a Dawg, he exemplified how being a Dawg can be a way of living your life. It is a way of life that creates and fosters families and builds bonds of friendships among strangers.

More importantly, Mr. Gibbs lived his life full of passion, loyalty, and honor. He demonstrated these qualities in his defense of our country, his love for his family, and his affection for everything red and black.

On Monday afternoon, a large black “G” stood next to the flag draped casket of Mr. Gibbs. After the preachers had spoken the Gospel, and his fellow sailors had bid adieu, “Glory, Glory” chimed from the organ and rang through the church as the pall bearers came to carry Mr. Gibbs away.

David Gibbs will be there in Sanford Stadium with you, with me, and with all of us in Athens on each Saturday. Along with the thousands of other legends that have dedicated themselves to this family and institution, he will forever stand between the hedges.

Fair winds and following seas.

Damn. Good. Dawg.

Earl and I with the Gibbs family and Mike Woods in Orlando on New Years Eve before the Capital One Bowl.

Welcome to BNE, AUMaverick

As some of you have noticed, there is a new contributor to the BNE staff...me. So, in the spirit of Lewis Grizzard, who loved the State of Georgia, UGA, and SEC football, I'd like to say WAR EAGLE to all you Georgia Dawgs as well as everyone else who follows this blog. I know Lewis wouldn't mind someone from "the other side" contributing to a blog dedicated to UGA and college football; afterall, the Deep South's Oldest Rivalry is between Auburn and UGA. Besides, just like CNN, FOX News and the AJC, every good editorial needs to be fair and balanced.

That being said, I'd also like to say GO DAWGS! No, you didn't read incorrectly, and no I am not a traitor to my school. I happen to love UGA and Auburn equally, except of course for one Saturday out of the year. For those of you who don't know, I was raised all over the world and I happen to call Georgia home. Belive it or not, I even lived in Athens for a short time. I have spent many nights in Athens with my Dawg friends, enjoying all the great scenery and atmosphere that only Athens can offer. My favorite restaurant is in Athens and I even met my wife in Athens one summer long ago. So, while UGA and Auburn have a very deep and bitter rivalry, it is still a friendly rivalry, and, being a great lover of SEC football and all things from the state of Georga, I too can root for UGA...most of the year.

So, from time to time, I will contribute my thoughts and observations on all things SEC football, UGA, and of course, Auburn. I will try to keep my thoughts fair and balanced, giving a voice to the others out there who may not always see the red between the black and white. I also vow, here and now, to hate Alabama and all things crimson and houndstooth. God hates BAMA just as much as he hates giant lizzards and stinging flying bugs. I make no apologies and that is the one thing I will always keep a hatred toward in my heart. However, I will keep my hatred for Bama out of the mix for as much as possible and focus soley on football.

With that, I'd like to close with a quote from Lewis Grizzard and I hope everyone enjoys the upcoming season. Lewis once said, "The game of life is a lot like football. You have to tackle your problems, block your fears, and score your points when you get the opportunity." Go Dawgs and WAR EAGLE!

*With this brief introduction, BNE invites you to become familiar with and ask that you please welcome AUMaverick to the contributing staff. His primary and first responsibility will be to manage this fall's upcoming BNE College Football Pick 'Em Pool, which you will learn more about in the coming days. We wanted to give AUMaverick this opportunity to introduce himself humbly to our faitful reader base in advance of the launch of this season's pool. Be sure to send AUMaverick your love & thoughts via the comments section of this post and by e-mailing him through his profile link. Go Dawgs! BFR & the BNE Staff

The Blasphemy That Is Fake Jerseys

Apparently we have been fooled all of these years, people. This is a brand new Joe Cox jersey:

Now, we've all seen these before. They are the torment on human existence known as "fake," "rip-off," or "Wal-Mart" jerseys.

While I have always scoffed at these things, I never really looked at the prices. As I browsed through a store yesterday, this thing was so hideous that I just had to look to see how much people were burning on these awful things.

$59.99!!!!! WHAT?!?!?!?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is mindblowingly INSANE!

You can go here, and purchase an official replica for $60.00!!! That's only a penny more.

And, as Bill King points out, you can go to the UGA bookstore and get an official replica Stafford/Orson Charles jersey for $15!!! Regularly it is, you guessed it, $60.

Wal-Mart may sell them cheaper, but it can't be that much cheaper to force yourself to parade around in such a monstrosity. You can have the real thing (or what we consider to be), for not that much more! If you're going to a regular sports shop, apparently you are going to pay the same price!

This is just plain wrong.

When you see someone wearing one of these, remember to tell them they can avoid massive douchebaggery by not purchasing these awful things.

Go for the real (but still kinda fake) thing.

The Countdown 2009: 97

As in 1997, Georgia's mascot, UGA, was named the #1 mascot in America.

UGA V graced the cover of Sports Illustrated's "America's Top 50 Jock Schools" issue.
